An Excellent Explanation of Class and Politics in the US White Working Class

Here.

Absolutely  immaculate. I have been observing these things all of my life. It also shows why the White working class or WWC (which really overlaps with the White middle class) hates the poor so much. Why they hate the professional classes so much. Why they love the rich so much. Why they are so frustrated with the bullshit issues of the Cultural Left so much. Why they hate the White Democratic Party elites so much – exemplified by Hillary Clinton. I don’t want to call the Democratic Party elites (DNC) liberals because that’s not what they are – there’s nothing liberal about them.

About how Democratic projects to help the poor with social programs always fail for the WWC and why the WWC resent them so much. About the almost crazy levels of work ethic and workaholism in the WWC. About the extreme level of self-sacrifice and value of decent, moral and thrifty behavior that this class has long exemplified. About the lack of proletarian consciousness in the WWC, their love of the rich, and the desire of so many of them to own their own business (to become bourgeois). About how they don’t just want a job – they want a good job. About why so many of them dislike unions. About why they hate the professional classes – doctors are quacks, lawyers are shysters, professors are idiots and teachers are despised and suspect. All of these are mostly hated as know it all’s who look down on the WWC.

About how white liberal elites sneering at WWC people for being racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and xenophobic arouses such hatred among these people. I mean Hell, I have been Cultural Left my whole life, and in the last 10-20 years, the Cultural Left has gone so bonkers that I of all people am now an evil reactionary Nazi fascist sexist, racist, bigoted, homophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, xenophobic freak. And I am still Cultural Left. I am just Cultural Left from a ways back, just not Cultural Left Full Insanity 2017. If they have this much hatred for a decent liberal like me, consider how much the Cultural Left must hate the real rednecks of the WWC!

About why the WWC hates the poor as shiftless, profligate bums sucking off the public teat while the WWC must work their tail off, gets no benefits, and has to eat beans out of a can.

About how WWC contempt for the shiftless and immoral poor overlaps with racism. Hint: it’s rooted in behavioral differences between the WWC and the non-White underclass. About how pride in America and patriotardism are very deeply rooted in the WWC and about how much they hate liberal upper middle class college students and college educated “traitors to America.” About how much they love cops and hate these same college educated elites for being cop-haters.

About how Donald Trump was the first politician in a long time who actually spoke to these people. About why they love Trump for being a rich man who is contemptuous of professionals and liberal elites. About how much they love Trump’s “straight talk.” About how straight talk is tied into WWC men’s sense of masculinity and their dislike of elite liberal “wussy” men who beat around the bush and don’t give you a straight answer about anything. About how much both male and female WWC people value good, hard masculinity in men and why they see Trump as a real man and elite liberal men as a bunch of wusses. About how they do not want to join the elite upper middle classes that they dislike so much but instead wish to live their same WWC lifestyles but with somewhat more money.

About how the immiseration of this class has humiliated a class that values pride of manhood, family, town, culture and nation so much and takes hits to their pride so hard.  About how this devastating loss of pride and sense of humiliation led not only to the election of Trump but to the current declines in life expectancy among the WWC, and the concurrent epidemics of alcoholism, domestic abuse of various kinds, suicide and opioid use

I will confess straight up. I never liked WWC values, although we inherited some of this as a White middle class family that also always lived in the edge and was constantly in debt. I grew up to never-ending tales of financial woes while living in a very nice White middle class neighborhood that would be considered a wealthy neighborhood full of mansions in most of the world. The White middle class of professionals I grew up with shared many values with the WWC.

My father was a man of endless sacrifice who nearly felt that fun was a sin. But he sure gave a lot of his money to us, though he moaned while he did. There’s a sense of deep generosity in my father that ran concurrently with the nearly masochistic workaholism, priggishness, suspicion of leisure and fun, and value of decent living, thrift, and deeply moral behavior. My father’s values were not that different from the rock-ribbed WWC family’s next door.

I am afraid that commenters and like Trash and Jason Y just do not understand the WWC or even WMC (the overlap) very well. I know these people like the back of my hand, though I do not share their values and honestly I despise a lot of their values as sanctimonious, silly, naive, masochistic, and ultimately reactionary. I never saw why they had to see life as such a hardass, miserable game. I always hated their contempt for the poor, the educated and the professional classes. Their love of the rich is disgusting and repellent. Their lack of proletarian consciousness and adopted bourgeois mindset (if only in fantasy) is infuriating. The contempt for the shiftless, the profligate, the irresponsible, and the hedonists seems vicious and senseless. I do not hate any of these people. Their embrace of the politics of resentment is sickening. Their racism makes me shake my head.

But hey look. They are not changing anytime soon. They are what they are. This is the way they are. This is their culture. It’s not going away, and in fact, it’s getting worse. We must deal with reality as it is, not as we wish it should be as females, SJW’s and other dreamer types are wont to do.

We must deal with the reality of these people and their culture, quit showering abuse on them, and figure out a way to get them to vote for us. We are not going to change their culture. Only they can do that, and I don’t think they want to change. If anything, they want to act even worse.

The first step to dealing with a problem is to define it and understand it in the first place. We must understand these people as they really are, not as our lies and fantasies make them out to be. You can’t get the right answer if you keep asking the wrong questions. We on the Left are not doing any of these things. We are failing to even remotely understand these people in the first place, which means we keep asking the wrong questions. The wrong questions just keep giving you the wrong answers, which is what we keep getting.

I would urge Democrats and liberals to read this article and attempt to deal with these people as they are, not as we wish and dream them to be, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. The response of the Democrats to the anti-SJW backlash has been to double down on the insanity and make everything worse. Like I said, they refuse to even ask the right questions.

And about the true dangers of what might happen when the WWC figures out that voting for Trump didn’t work and instead made things even worse. That’s right – they will go even further rightwing than they already area.

  1. There is an inordinate contempt for white middle class America from SJW’s. They are rapacious by nature, and feeding them some wins on the cultural front only hungers them further. The way they would structure society if allowed is obviously not feasible evidenced by their intrinsic denial of biology. I think where we disagree are your attempts to disassociate the progressive movement from radical leftists. If the focus is predominantly on social issues, leftists don’t truly have an end goal. There are some you and I would agree are off the table (minority rights, or in my case liberties) but beyond that, it’s ambiguous.

I’m positive a significant portion, if polled, wouldn’t capitulate at transgender bathrooms. Many would long for a sort of societial affirmative action program, on steroids. For example, the pool for potential candidates in any election would be limited to Black or Muslim women. You might think this is implausible, but around 50 percent of Republicans polled believed we should bomb a fictional Muslim country named Aladdin. It isn’t a stretch to suggest that similar data might emerge from the hard constituency of the Democratic party.

I believe the best way to keep the base from eating itself is to take a sharp direction towards implementing economic policies. This would need to be a real movement with policies crafted specifically towards the middle class. If the results speak for themselves, the white working class voters will ameliorate the loss from disassociated cultural leftists. Though I probably shouldn’t have wrote this, as our politics differ wildly. Woe is me.

    • I have a feeling our politics do not differ as much as you think. After all, we are both Leftists. I would say no enemies to the Left, except that Leftists keep hating me and threatening to kill me. If I can find one Leftist who will even give me the time of day without threatening to slit my throat it would be great. Really the only people who are nice to me at all are conservatives, even reactionaries and out and out fascists. Which is disturbing as I am basically a real Leftist bash the fash type, and I despise reactionaries and even conservatives due to their basic outlook.

The problem is that I am a standard economic Leftist, but the Cultural Left has gone so insane that I am now considered to be a “social conservative” because the Cultural Left train left me at the station 20 years ago or so. I have considered mysself to be Cultural Left my whole life, going all the way back to my days as a liberal or even socialist in the 1970’s. But back then, the Cultural Left wasn’t nuts. We just wanted lots of free dope and free sex and maybe some basic rights for gays minorities and whatnot. Thing is I am not a social conservative! Social conservatives are the Republican Party, Donald Trump, the religious right, and that ghastly man Mike Pence! They’re horrific. I hate them!

I despise the modern Cultural Left and modern US Republican social conservatives with equal ferocity.

I guess what I am arguing for is people being and acting “normal.” I’ve been relatively normal my whole life. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, Cultural Left people were just regular normal men and women. Not freaks, not weirdos, not perverts, not deviants, not bizarro crazies, just regular everyday folks, men who acted like men and women who acted like women. Women who liked to fuck men and men who liked to fuck women. That’s all up for grabs now that the Cultural Left seems to have declared war on the very idea of being normal.

  2. I’m pretty sure our politics differ wildly; I wouldn’t call myself a leftist in any respect as long as equality is a tenet. I’m a U.S. libertarian. So we sort of agree on cultural issues (though we’d probably disagree on the prescription) and we disagree fully on economics. This is assuming you’re a welfare state liberal. If I’ve misrepresented your views feel free to let me know.

    • I am worse than that. I am more of an out and out Marxist, Chinese Communist Party style.

Your website said ancom, so I thought you were an an anarchocommunist, because that is what ancom generally means.

Yeah I am definitely not a Libertarian, that’s for sure. A lot of them are real nice to me though, but that’s because the only people who are nice to me at all are rightwingers. Most all liberals and Leftists openly hate my guts. Weird because I am one of them myself!

Can the WWC add? They must know that the richer capitalists are, the poorer they will be. Let’s take a company. It has owners, managers and working stiffs. The managers may be a snooty bunch, but it is the owners who have an economic interest in lowering wages, cutting benefits, increasing working hours. Trump would be a much less rich man if he had paid his employees higher wages.

When working stiffs resent snobbish college professors more than greedy capitalists who would like to turn the country into a paradise for the rich, then they are indeed politically stupid. You should not only ask whether people are like you but also whose interests they have at heart. Capitalists, even if they have blue-collar manners, are not noted for their keen concern for the welfare of working stiffs.

A capitalist who would like to reduce their wages and privatize Social Security is a bigger threat to the well-being of the WWC than a college professor who sips Italian wines, reads French novels, watches Swedish movies, likes German operas and listens to Latin American music. Folksy, inarticulate, unintellectual plutocrats like Bush junior and Trump are essentially swindlers, who talk like the WWC, but only in order to squeeze them.

    • Those “stupid WWC voters” might counter and point out that if wages are irredeemably reduced in one company, another company might offer a better rate in order to attract employees. Let’s debate it if you have a counterargument, I’m willing to hear it, but this comment was purely vitriolic and rhetorical (though I understand it wasnt directed at me.)

      • TRASH 2

Wages have not increased in literal terms since 1970 or something.

Go to a Red Light district and solicit hookers. The more hookers, the lower the rate goes.

Free market capitalism brings the wages down, not up. Visit a Third World country where human-capitol is totally free market like Philippines.

      • I am sorry. You cannot advocate Libertarian economics on here or any rightwing economics period, honestly. We simply do not allow it. This is a socialist blog. I think this site might not be a good fit for you unless you only want to talk about cultural issues, on which it is ok for you to be a social conservative.

        So sorry about this.

      JAMES Culture not Cash

It is less about wages than it is about middle-class Democrats feeling that wwc is often prone to early adulthood mistakes. I am often guilty of this.

Having grown up in a two-tier class structure where if you had a kid and did not complete college you were automatically assigned to the white working class (And a really bleak one in Detroit) I know exactly how the working class feels.

They feel that the middle-class sneer at them as less intelligent, lower IQ, less able to brush their teeth every day and wear a rubber in high school. Let’s face it.

  4. Wages don’t necessarily need to raise. You could argue that they do to accommodate for inflation, but setting an arbitrary floor (living wage whatever) only incentivizes the employer to compromise on some other quality. And, strawman.

    • TRASH 2

I’m simply saying that companies usually don’t raise wages to compete with others in a free-marketplace. That is nonsense.

  5. James Schipper

Suppose that there are 2 landlords. One is essentially a peasant with property who treats his peasants abominably. The other has a very refined lifestyle and is given to elegance. He treats his peasants very decently. Which landlord should the peasants prefer? If they have their heads screwed on right, they’ll prefer the second. Many American WWC would prefer the first.

Status is very important to many people. I don’t care about it myself. When a country is racially, religiously and linguistically homogeneous, class is the most important source of status. When a country is biracial or multiracial, race can also be a source of status. Didn’t a Southern politician once say that the suppression of the Negro elevates every Southern white?

He was right. If the mere possession of a white skin puts a person, however poor and ignorant, into the high-status group, then class-derived status becomes less important. This goes to show again that class politics becomes more difficult when there is diversity. Diversity allows the elite to co-opt some or most of the populace by convincing them that they are in the same boat as the elite because of their common race, religion or language.

There is no other Western country in which ordinary whites are more disinclined to vote for a leftist party than the US. The explanation can only be that the US is the Western country which has had a significant non-white minority for the longest time. Their whiteness made many ordinary American whites feel as if they were part of the dominant group.

There is no modern country with a two-tier class system. There is more a class continuum than a class dichotomy. In countries like the US and Canada, we have the super-rich, the rich, the prosperous, the working poor and the underclass. Even this 5-way classification is an oversimplification.

A libertarian is a person who thinks that a landlord should have the right to tell his tenant on the 24th of December that he should be out of his rented place within 24 hours, or that an employer should have the right to fire an employee at any time and for any reason. In a democracy, libertarians will always remain marginal. If you really want libertarian economics, you should advocate a political system in which only high-income people have the right to vote. If only the richest 5% can vote, then the libertarians will have a chance.

Question: How many white blue-collar workers did Trump invite to his wedding when he married Melania?

  7. TRASH 2

    JAMES

How many Democrats (Old Money WASPS, Jews, Irish-Catholics) want to live in the Detroit ghetto any more than the average Klavern of Klansman.

How many German or Canadian immigrants in the US really identify with Mestizos?

  8. markus

He treats his peasants very decently. Which landlord should the peasants prefer? If they have their heads screwed on right, they’ll prefer the second. Many American WWC would prefer the first.

It’s clearly a tribal thing here, and I have witnessed it a few times.
“He’s one of us, so he can be a jerk”, is very likely the visceral thought process of the WWC. Yet, should the nice guy that’s an “outsider” of some sorts (higher class, more educated or a foreigner) get slightly annoyed at someone once, he’s marked as the tyrant.

  9. Jason Y

Some opponents would argue (as was stated in another comment on another post) that the alt-right, Nazis etc.. want special rights for whites at the exclusion of non-whites. But the sticker is that this was already tried in Nazi Germany to utmost failure – as the opponents claim.

Also, let’s look at the hypocrisy, as probably Trash would bring up, of bitching about lazy blacks and “dey programs, lol” and advocating the same for whites (at the exclusion of NAMS, of course).

  10. Jason Y

Their embrace of the politics of resentment is sickening. Their racism makes me shake my head.

Not all working class are Nazi brothers. Not all of them want special rights for whites (at the expense of non-whites), but yet, they don’t appreciate anti-white insults either.

So you got two groups of so-called conservative whites: One is the Fascist variety and the other would probably vote for W. Bush. Some, and would good reason, would argue the fascists are not conservatives, but as I was saying, special rights leftist whites. That was the movement under Hitler. It was National Socialism – and the words were not a joke.

So National Socialism or statism as called by Richard Spencer, is basically a mixed economy where whites are massively favored. Does it work? Well, it didn’t work in Nazi Germany and probably doesn’t really work in Japan and South Korea, or China. Note, these places have booms, but like Japan in 1990 and China coming up, they eventually go down.

  11. Jason Y

Actually, minus the brutal racism, FDR was a National Socialist. Basically, any sort of highly mobilized mixed economy is that way That would differ somewhat, maybe a lot, from Communism, where all means of production are state owned.

But the similarities include Big Brother, an appeal to either patriotism, racism or both, and a venomous hatred of the Capitalist class, which in the Nazi case was represented by Jews who supposedly brought on the Great Depression (Mind you, the Fed brought on the Great Depression by encouraging wild gambling on stocks, much as in 2008).

  12. Tulio

I think this is the best long-form piece I’ve read to date that explains the Trump phenomena:

  13. Yee

Free market doesn’t work because it doesn’t exist.

The market has always been controlled, by those who have the resources to control the economy, starts from finance to commodities, down to technology, rent and labor, most effectively at upstream economics.

Free Market actually means those who hold resources (capital) can freely manipulate the market, more resources more ability to manipulate.

Unless your name is Rothschild, Morgan, Rockerfeller, ordinary wage/salary earners wanting to be libertarian is plain stupid.

It’s why the capitalists want a weak govt. By reducing the power of govt, their power to control become sole. It’s like without the police, those holding guns will dominate those holding butter knives. Any surprise if gangsters with big guns want “small police” and “free street”?

  14. TRASH 2

    YEE

This is all true, but the worst aspect is that the wealthy don’t care about the poor or their conditions.

Another words if you have private security you do not want to pay for police, you don’t need them.

    • Yee

Well, it’s unrealistic to expect a whole bunch of people to care about other people, poor or otherwise. That’s why a government is needed to enforce some kind of balance between the powerful and powerless.
