On London Bridge. Three attackers used a van to plow into pedestrians, then got out and started stabbing people with knives. 6 killed, 48 wounded. All three attackers shot dead. Story is still unfolding. Looks like it happened ~Midnight London time.

Ken Curtis: Don’t really say what or who to you represents American conservatism. If you’re under the assumption that Donald Trump is an American conservative, you are wrong.
Define who or what groups are American conservatives. Regardless, I’m not going anywhere unless you block my happy white ass who loves guns and religion.
I am very curious why Ken Curtis feels that Donald Trump is not a conservative.
I could block you, but if you only refrain from advocating conservative economics, you can post here til the cows come home. I have had conservatives on my site for years. They just post on other stuff, and I write about a lot of other stuff. I would not care if there were 10,000 conservatives on my site as long as they were posting about other stuff. I can’t well ban people because of their thoughts.
I was pretty mad the other day, but I am calmed down now.
I am opposed to Trump and all of his Administration and all of the Republican Party in Congress. That party has turned into a monstrosity. They have finally evolved into an American form of fascism. They’ve been headed down that road slowly since Reagan. Reagan started the long march to fascism.
What I am mostly opposed to is rightwing economics. It’s diabolical. We do not buy into this small government bull. It’s idiocy. Rightwing economics is only good for the rich. If you make over $75,000/yr, go ahead and vote Republican. But less than that, you are getting screwed. The Republican agenda is give everything to the rich and screw everybody else. If you’re rich, I get it, but if you’re not rich, why would you support that?
Americans are stupid. They are too dumb to understand class war. Class war is continuous under capitalism. The Republican agenda is to take as much money as they can from those making under $75,000 and give it to those making over $75,000. As money does not grow on trees, the only way the rich can get richer is to take money from the lower classes. If you make under $75,000, the Republicans are trying to take your money and your stuff and give it to a bunch of rich and upper middle class people. Why would anyone support a bunch of rich people who are picking their pockets?
You absolutely must support a safety net on this board. You can’t advocate even cutting the social safety net or cutting any social programs for that matter on this board. You can think that way, but you cannot voice that opinion here.
If you reject the crap rightwing economics and your only conservatism is in religion, guns, etc. I would even let you post that stuff on my board. Just stay away from partisan posting. I can live with religious conservatives and gun nuts. I can’t live with economic conservatives. I would prefer leukemia.
The problem with conservatism is that conservatives believe in rule by aristocracy. Well, if you are an aristocrat, then conservatism is for you. The Left on the other hand, believes in democratic rule or rule by the people. If democratic rule is rule by the people, then conservatives with their divine rule of kings mindset are against democracy.
And indeed, if you study conservatism down through space and time, one thing that is clear is that conservatives have always opposed democracy. They call it mob rule, rule by the rabble, populism and all sorts of nasty things.
That’s is why we are having all this vote suppression going on. Conservatives are trying to stop democracy by stopping the people from voting. You know what? That’s real crappy. Trying to keep American citizens from voting just because they vote Left. That’s downright evil.
To make matters worse, since 2000, conservatives have been hacking the voting machines and stealing elections. Bush 2000, Bush 2004, and Trump 2016 were all won by computer vote fraud via hacking those computerized voting machines. They plotted this out very well, and the top Republicans all know that they are hacking the system and stealing elections. They just don’t care. I’m sorry, but I think that is evil. If these people are willing to commit fraud and hack votes and steal elections just to keep the Left out of power, well, they’re just evil. So you can see why I think Republicans are simply evil nowadays.
Are you an aristocrat? Do you support the divine rule of kings. Do you believe that the strong must rule the weak? Do you believe that the Whites must rule the non-Whites? Do you believe that the rich must rule the non-rich? If you do not believe in these things, why vote Republican? Because the Republican Party is all about all of these things.
For instance, say you are a deeply religious fundamentalist Protestant and you love your guns, but you are opposed to the Economics of the Rich and you support a strong safety net. I would even allow you to advocate that sort of conservatism on here. I’ve had gun nuts on here for years, and I never banned them. One gun nut has been here for I think seven years now.
I am a voracious reader, and lately at least, I am often reading between 20-40 books all at once. I pick up one, read 20 pages or so, and put it down. Then I pick up another one, read another 20 pages or so, and put it down too. It’s not really a problem for most nonfiction books and it works fine for books of essays and short stories. The poetry I read is often long narrative poetry where you have a single poem that goes on for an entire book of 200-300 pages. This method works well for these poetry books.
It is a bit of a problem with novels. I will admit it. You do tend to lose your place a bit and sometimes I just have to go back and start all the way over again. I think I am going to need to restart War and Peace and the Brothers Karamazov because I forgot what I read.
I do not know if this way of reading is stupid and sensible. It’s just the way I do it. It’s actually rather fun to read this way.

Greeneyedpea: Thank you Robert for this. I agree.
I don’t want to mix up “conservatives” with “religious folks”, but do you have any thoughts on that? Most of the time, the conservatives that I run into are “born again” or “evangelical” Christians, and they are usually the most hateful, judgmental crowd around. I was in the evangelical movement for years, but left, b/c I could not stand the fear-based ideology – the list of no-nos, or you’ll go to hell, the fake kindnesses while you’re stabbed in the back in private, etc. Bitter…maybe. I think Jesus won’t recognize most of them.
A weird example: Many in the rural town I lived in for a while have the bumper sticker: “Proud to be an American”. I have always thought that to be odd. Pride is an emotion one should have for an accomplishment, or hard work, or a talent that is nurtured with practice. We have no say in where we are born.
If one is born in America, I think the phrase should be “Blessed to be an American” (in essence, giving thanks to God who predetermined that your life would start in America), or “Grateful to be an American”. And you would think that those conservatives that have this bumper sticker would agree with this, but no they are proud, damn it.
The ironic thing is that when I bring up an immigrant who became a naturalized citizen as being the shining example of someone who truly can say “Proud to be an American” (i.e. they worked for it via studying and passing a test most born-Americans could not pass, by the way), their face turns, and its clear they don’t like immigrants of any form (legal or illegal, especially), and there is no acknowledgment of the work this person has put in to become an American citizen, and the worst here “They are not ‘true’ Americans anyway”. Ugh. I know these are random, disjointed thoughts, but I find conservatives to be those patriotic, evangelical types. And it’s nauseating.
I am a bit religious myself, but you will probably not find a more secular Christian.
The Protestant fundamentalists are particularly horrible. I might still let them post here, but most are economic conservatives too, so they will segregate out on their own.
Mr. Pence is awful. The anti-abortion crowd makes me sick. I don’t like discrimination against homosexuals or transgenders. Most of these fundies are very hateful people, and they assume the worst about everyone because they are concrete thinkers. They’re frankly full of hate. They and I simply do not get along, mostly because they think I am an immoral scum. Plus most of them think liberals are evil and should be killed. This is one of the nastiest forms of stupid religion out there. It’s not as bad as fundamentalist Islam, but it’s up there.
It’s probably better described as just stupid than any other adjective, but as I pointed out in another post, people who engage in a lot of stupid, illogical thinking are often hateful and support a lot of unpleasant projects.
These fundies have a very bizarre opinion about Catholics which borders on the delusional. Their opinion about Catholics is false and highly illogical. They typically state that Catholics are not Christians. This is simply false. Catholics are the original Christians! For 1,500 years, Catholics were the only Christians on this planet. I was going to a heavily Hispanic Catholic church here in town for a while, and they were so much better than those fundie Protestants, it was not even funny.
I simply do not think I could get along with someone like that. It’s just not going to work, sorry. Sooner or later they will start calling me evil, and I don’t appreciate that.
My mother goes to a mainline Protestant church (Methodist), and I am OK with that.
Patriotards can probably post here, but almost all of them are also economic conservatives, so they are going to self-segregate out like the religious folks.
American Patriotardism is just dumb. It’s based on this very stupid idea that there is something inherently good about America, it’s culture, its history, its politics, its military and its foreign policy.
There is nothing inherently good about the United States! Or any other country for that matter. For Chrissake. A nation is only as good as its leaders. And no culture is inherently good. Good cultures can go bad and bad cultures can go good in a heartbeat.
These Patriotards people also believe in “My country, right or wrong!” This is Patriotardism. It’s stupid! If my country is wrong, I am going to oppose it, dammit! If I dislike the culture, I will oppose that culture and work to change it. If the politics blows, I will dislike the politics and work to evolve a better politics. If the government is crap, I will hate the state and try to throw that group out and put in a better group. If my nation’s history is bad, I will admit it, regret our bad behavior and work towards changing my country’s behavior so my descendants do not have to apologize for our awful behavior.
There is nothing inherently good about the US military! I assure you. A military is only as good as its generals and civilian leadership. If those are terrible, they will give orders for the military to do some pretty bad things. US soldiers are not inherently good! They are as good as their generals and civilian leadership. If they are given lousy missions to carry out, US soldiers may very well end up doing a lot of bad things. And this has been the case in recent history. A soldier is like an automaton, a robot. He simply does what he is told to do.
Many nations have had decent militaries that turned monstrous and vice versa in history. It could and actually has happened here. We were on the side of good in World War 2, I will admit it, but in Vietnam or Iraq. It is idiocy to support every war your country wages in the name of “support the troops”! If the soldiers have been given a malign mission to carry out, as in Iraq, they should not be supported!
The war must be opposed on the grounds that it was of malign intent, and the soldiers should be supported in the sense of getting them out of that wicked war where they will be killed and injured for an evil cause. The best way of all to support the troops is to keep them from getting killed! I cannot think of a better way to support the troops than to call for an end to a diabolical and nasty war with a malign agenda.
There is indeed an ideology behind the US military. The Pentagon is not a non-ideological institution. Having studied Pentagon ideology for a long time, I assure you that the ideology of the US military is not good at all. Actually it is quite bad. Therefore, the US military must not be supported in its bad objectives. And its ideology needs to be changed to support positive and decent objectives instead of nasty and vicious ones.
Hatred of immigrants simply for being immigrants is just morally wrong. And it is caused by stupid thinking. Of course an immigrant is a real American. If he has become naturalized and is a US citizen, I say, “Welcome to my country, my fellow American!” I actually say this to some immigrants who have become citizens. I am happy that they have come to my country and liked it enough to become a citizen alongside me! Many of them also like the better things about our culture that were not present in their nation, though we are approaching the banana republic and tinpot dictatorship and generally awful politics and even culture of the Third World ourselves now with our recent descent into fascism.
Why hate a legal immigrant just for being an immigrant? They did it legally and fair and square. They stood in line and often waited for quite a few years. My ancestors were immigrants too. They came from Europe. Why were those immigrants ok but these new ones not ok? Why were my ancestors real Americans but recent Americans are not real Americans? That sounds like lousy, stupid thinking. It seems to fail a number of logic tests on its surface. This is simply emotionally driven, petty, irrational and hateful prejudice. It is a stupid and illogical thinking style that is also harmful to many innocent human beings. It’s pretty disgusting.
While IQ is surely important and it is the best measure of intelligence we have, I would say that honestly it is not the score itself that matters.
Instead, what matters is how smart you are!
There is a curious phenomenon of people with not particularly high scores who seem much more intelligent than their scores. In that case, what matters is not their unimpressive number but how intelligent they are.
I have known several people with IQ’s in the normal range. Scores were 94, 97, 106 and 107. You would think that is not very impressive. But all of these people were very smart! And I would say the latter three were pretty much on a level with me. And my number is three full standard deviations above theirs!
I talked with the 97 IQ guy many times. He is smart as Hell, and he knows a lot about all sorts of things. You name it, he knows about it. I think he has been filling his head up with information his whole life.
The 106 and 107 IQ guys were commenters on my site. One is still here. This guy is smart as Hell. He’s able to understand most everything I write about and I am amazed by his analysis. He does excellent analytical thinking. The other fellow used to comment on here and he understood most everything I write too. He also had superb analytical thinking skills.
The 94 IQ guy is a friend of mine. Sometimes I am a bit over his head, like with my Linguistics posts, but he’s hardly to blame for that. He has been filling his head up with information his whole life. He reads voraciously and in particular is an expert on the JFK assassination. His knowledge of the assassination itself and its greater context in the flow of US history is amazing.
People with higher numbers tend to value and respect intelligence more than people with lower numbers. That is because as the numbers go up, people’s brains work faster and faster. People with higher numbers are often sensual intellectuals, that is, they get off on learning and knowledge as if it were an actual activity of the senses. They often read a lot and know a lot about a lot of things.
Therefore, their conversational style is going to be a lot more intellectual because intellectualism is a value for them. It makes life interesting. These people will enjoy others with high intelligence too simply because they find them more interesting to talk to and deal with. They don’t usually hate people who are less bright. Instead they often just think they are boring. That’s pretty much my complaint. Such folks are often very nice and have equal value as human beings to me. Their lives and existence and contributions on this Earth are about equal to mine. But they’re just not that interesting to me. They don’t have much to say.
When I start talking, I have to explain things over and over because I keep getting these baffled “that does not compute” looks that show that they do not understand what I am talking about. So I can either quit talking to them or I sit there and explain things for the length of the conversation. It gets old having to explain things all the time, and when you tell people these new facts, they typically don’t have anything interesting to say or add about these new facts.
Higher IQ people are not snobs. Their brains are simply much faster than other people’s brains. In addition, they can store more information both long and short term and can they have better recall. So they have a lot more storage space in their brains (brains = hard drive) and they can call up that information much faster and more accurate (recall = memory sticks). It follows that faster brains with more storage space and better and faster recall are going to be better at analytical thinking, at putting it all together, at seeing the big picture.
On the other hand, high IQ is no guarantee of good critical thinking. I know people with genius IQ’s who engage in lousy, erroneous, non-critical thinking all the time. This is because they are emotional. Their emotions override and shut down their critical thinking skills. Emotion and logic mixes about as well as oil and water. Also many of these people are stuck on their old ideas and they do not wish to challenge or reject the stuff they have been believing their whole life. Challenging long-held assumptions about how the works is probably upsetting to most people and no doubt causes a lot of anxiety. So people just carry on with their same old erroneous and dumb attitudes because changing them is just too upsetting.
I’m not saying analytical thinking is everything. If anything, it is very alienating because the world operates on concrete thinking. Concrete thinking with its concordant logical fallacies are the norm for most humans. Sure it’s a dumb way to think, but most people think in pretty dumb ways. That’s just how humanity is.
So if you are an analytical thinker, you are always running into people spouting off their erroneous and concretistic bullshit. In addition, concrete thinking is often hateful and it is injurious to other humans.
This is because when you change from concrete to analytical thinking, you realize that people are a lot less contemptible than you thought they were.
Concrete thinking leads to hate and prejudice. One thing concrete thinkers do is to assume the worst about people. Say you observe a behavior, a guy hiking down a trail, or you read an essay someone wrote. If you are thinking concretely, you are much more likely to be suspicious and believe that the thinker is up to no good.
An example. I used to live in the woods. I often walked down dirt roads with binoculars and a birdwatching book in my pocket. Why? I am a fanatical birdwatcher! There were homes scattered all through these foothill woods, but I never cared much about the people. I was there to look at birds, not people. I did not train my binoculars on a human or a home on even one occasion. I’ve seen plenty of humans and houses. When I am out watching, if you are not a bird, you are “in the way.” You might as well not even be there. The humans and the houses are at best blocking the view of the birds!
A friend later confided in me that a lot of people who lived down those roads really hated me for my birdwatching. Apparently they had no idea that I was birdwatching, probably because they were too stupid to figure out that that is what I was doing. My friend said that many of the residents felt that I was some sort of sexual pervert or criminal who was looking into people’s homes with my binoculars. Why? Just to be a weirdo invading people’s privacy or maybe as a peeper and voyeur looking to get a peek at a naked woman. Funny thing is I never looked inside a home one time. I never trained my binocs on a human even one time.
So you can see that this concretistic, dumb-ass thinking was very injurious to me. It led to me being hated by many of my neighbors for absolutely no reason at all.
If there were analytical thinkers on that road, they would not have thrown so much hate in my direction. Most of them would have probably seen me and come up with different hypotheses about what I was doing. Perhaps some would have entertained the hypotheses that I was a freak or a voyeuristic peeper.
But they would probably entertain other hypotheses too, such as that maybe I was a birdwatcher. For instance, many times I would be looking up in some tree or into some thicket at a bird. There’s no naked humans or humans period up in those trees or those bushes. The analytical thinkers may have tested their hypotheses by carefully observing my behavior. This would be how they tested their various hypotheses. It’s called gathering data. Next they would test the data against the different hypotheses to see which hypothesis explained the data best. After seeing me mostly looking at trees, forest and thickets where there were no humans and maybe even seeing me reach for my Peterson guide now and again, they would probably conclude that I was a birdwatcher. Then they would shrug their shoulders and walk away.
Because the analytical thinker entertained a variety of hypotheses about what I might be doing, he would be much less likely to conclude that I was some criminal peeper weirdo up to no good.
In addition, concretistic thinking is highly associated with logical fallacies. Logical fallacies are by definition erroneous thinking because they may very well lead to the wrong answer. Logical fallacies are the cause of much misery and even death and injury of other humans. Most of the hate in the world can be traced back to some logical fallacy that some person is engaging in that is driving their hatred of other humans.
Because many higher IQ people prefer analytical thinking to concrete thinking, it is painful to have to be assaulted by tidal waves of concretistic crap and logical fallacy all day long. Pretty soon you start thinking that the world is full of idiots. You get tired of correcting people’s crappy thinking and logical errors and being a scold doesn’t win you many friends anyway. I can barely tolerate a concrete thinker in my presence unless he is in a friendly mood. It is actually physically painful to be around them. We feel it in our bones.
Logical fallacies are by their nature illogical. A synonym for illogical is irrational. if something is irrational and illogical, it doesn’t make sense and it’s usually a lie or a false statement. If you think logically (analytically) it is very trying to stroll through what boils down to an extremely irrational quotidian existence.
You are surrounded all day long by irrational people who can’t think or talk sense. People who can’t think or talk sense are senseless. So analytical thinkers must deal with a daily assault, usually hundreds or thousands of times a day, of utter senselessness. Hence to analytical thinkers, most of the people they meet in their daily existence seem quite senseless. Everywhere they go, senselessness, lies, BS stupid thinking, irrationality, and utter nonsense is punching them in the face. By the end of the day, they’ve been belted in the face by nonsense maybe thousands of times.
You wonder why those 160+ IQ men I discussed in an earlier post were so disgusted with people that they had become lonely misanthropes who spent most of their time in solitude in small apartments.
There’s your reason.
We have had a few conservatives posting here in the past few days. These are US-style conservatives, which are the worst kind of all. US-style conservatives are absolutely banned from posting here in any way, shape or form.
Conservatism means different things in different countries, so conservatives from much of the rest of the world (except Latin America and the UK) can continue to post. Even Canadian conservatives can continue to post, as I do not mind them. It’s not conservatism itself that is so awful. Almost every country on Earth has people who call themselves conservatives, and there are conservative parties in almost every country on Earth. But being a conservative just about anywhere outside of the Americas is more or less an acceptable position for me. I probably won’t like their politics much, but I could at least look at them and say that this is an opposition I could live with.
US conservatives and their brethren in the UK, Latin America, the Philippines, Nepal and and Indonesia are quite a different beast.
I have to think hard about conservatives in Eastern Europe, especially Estonia, Latvia and the Czech Republic. These fools had such a bad experience with Communism that they went 180 degrees in the other direction. I would have to see the positions of these conservative parties in those countries to see whether they would be OK or not.
Just to give you an example, Vladimir Putin is considered to be a right-winger, and his party United Russia advocates a politics called Russian Conservatism. Looking at the party’s platform, this is not only a conservatism that I could live with but one I might even vote for!
Conservatives in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, and most other places in Asia are acceptable. The conservatives in the Stans, Georgia, Ukraine, and Armenia can be rather awful, particularly in the nationalist sense, but I will not ban them.
I dislike Indian conservatives, but I will not ban them.
Conservatives from the Muslim World are all acceptable. In the Muslim World, conservatism just means religious and sometimes nationalist. I can live with that. Even the ones in Iran are orders of magnitude better than the US type.
Conservatives in the Arab World are acceptable. They are mostly just religious people.
Turkish conservatives are awful, but I will not ban them. They are just religious and a particularly awful type of nationalist.
African conservatives are OK.
Conservatives in Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, Switzerland, Italy, the Balkans, Bulgaria, Greece, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania are sometimes good, sometimes pretty bad, but they are all acceptable here. Conservatism in Europe mostly means nationalism. I am actually rather fond of the conservative running Hungary, Orban. LePen conservatives leave something to be desired, but they are acceptable. They’re mostly just nationalists. Hell, I might even vote for Marine LePen! If it was down to LePen versus Macron, I would absolutely support LePen!
Conservatives from Indonesia, Nepal and Philippines are not OK. These are an “everything for the rich elite, nothing for anybody else” type of conservative. Some of them even hide under the labels of Socialist or even Communist.
The word conservative has no real inherent meaning. It means whatever people say it means.
Anyway, the conservatives in the US are pure garbage and recently they have become out and out fascists after moving in that direction for a long time. And a particularly horrible type of fascist at that, a Latin American/Filipino/Indonesian style fascist. I will not allow any US conservatives to post on this board. You all are lucky I even let you lurk here. That’s an idle threat as I can’t ban lurkers, but if they all stopped lurking, I would not mind frankly.
You all really ought to go back to the gutters you crawled out of.
PS This especially applies to Libertarians, the very worst of all the US conservative vermin. We shoot Libertarians on sight here, so you better watch out.
*This applies only to economic conservatives. If you are not an economic conservative, and your conservatism is only of the social variety or you are only conservative on race, religion, guns, law and order, respect for tradition, American nationalism, the military, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity issues, you can stay. I’m not crazy about some social conservatives, but I can live with them. I will probably even let patriotards post as long as they are not economic conservatives.
I am an American nationalist myself. I just don’t like patriotards. Of course, I very much dislike and even hate the country as it is right now, but I sure don’t want to make it worse! I have to live here too you now, and it might as well be as pleasant as possible as long I stay here.
I want what’s best for my country. I don’t want to harm this country or screw it over. That will be bad for me! And believe it or not, most US patriotards do not want what is best for the country! I have dreams of a greater and better America. It’s not impossible, but we will have to undergo some serious cultural changes. One of the reasons I am so against illegal immigration is because it is ruining my country and making this place even worse. Also illegal immigration is terrible for US workers and I am for the workers. I am against H-1B visas for the same reason – they are wrecking my country. IT workers are workers too, so they are my comrades. I want what is best for America and American workers.
I cannot live with economic conservatives. I like cancer way more than I like US conservatives. Cancer is much more decent and respectable.
