This excellent piece on the genetics of the Ainu shows that they are in fact very different from Japanese, Koreans, Okinawans, Chinese and in fact all other East Asians. The best explanation for this is that the Australoid Ainu are the remains of the ancient Northeast Asians before they transitioned to Mongoloids 9,000 years ago.

They are now seen as Australoids and not as Caucasians as they were erroneously thought to be for a long time. The reason they were thought to be Caucasoids is because when you cross an Australoid with a Mongoloid, you often end up with a rather Caucasoid phenotype.

In fact, the Ainu may be the best remnants of the ancient East Asian race which may have had its beginnings around Lake Baikal 35,000 years ago. However, we know that the Ainu are related to the Jomonese, and the Jomonese can be traced all the way back to Thailand 16,000 YBP. Around that time, it is thought that the Ainu in the form of the Murrayan people journeyed to Australia, forming one of the main components of the Aborigine people. Around this same time, they may have gone to the Philippines, for their reports that one of the very ancient Filipino groups may have had an Ainu appearance.
The Ainu are the blue triangles trailing off the right. The Okinawans are the closest to the Ainu, and even they are not that close.
Interestingly, ancient Amerindians from 9-12,000 YBP have an Australoid appearance. The skulls from 9000 YBP appear Ainuid or Polynesian and the earlier skulls line up with Negritos, Papuans and Aborigines. This implies that the ancient Northeast Asians or Siberians from around the Altai region who immigrated to North America 9-12,000 YBP may have been an Ainuid people.

Regarding Google searches for K-Pop versus J-Pop: The trendline shows that searches for J-Pop were never very high, even at the peak of Japanese pop culture glory…because most fans of Japanese pop culture don’t use the term “J-Pop” for anything other than Japanese pop music, which has probably the smallest footprint out of the Rising Sun’s various fan-favorite emanations, Searches for anime and manga absolutely crush those for K-Pop, it could be an indicator that anime and manga, here in the United States, are no longer imported culture – they’re part of the landscape. Go to any library or bookstore (there are still physical bookstores, right?) and you’ll see that manga has an enormous dedicated section all to its own, larger than many of the other genre sections, and generally surrounded with clusters of absorbed youth lounging like they own the place. It’s not a teen fad, it’s a teen consumption category: Snacks, fashion, manga.
Japanese pop culture has come to the American landscape in the form of visual media — primarily anime and manga. (Games too, but up until very recently, Japanese video games came to the U.S. with most of their unique cultural context flensed away so as not to freak out American parents.) Because those media forms were naturally produced and presented in Japanese, J-Pop fandom erupted organically and grew epidemically out of a kind of language-hacking Underground Railroad of pirate BBS’s that offered downloadable English script translations and VHS-tape-trading marketplaces.
In short, fandom flourished because the only way to enjoy authentic J-Pop in that early era was through connections to the fan community. (In fact, the hardest-core fans eventually became the U.S. anime and manga industry, launching the first legit English-language distribution houses, and thus laying the foundation for a subsequent generation’s total immersion in Japanese cultural products.)
K-Pop fandom is centered around music. (Yes, Korean live-action dramas and movies are popular as well, but they appeal to different demographic segments, and don’t tend to generate the fannish intensity that Korean pop idols do…unless they happen to star Korean pop idols). K-Pop fans don’t need translations of their music to enjoy it; as Ted Kim notes, when Mnet asked their viewers if they wanted their music videos to carry subtitles, the response was horrified: “No way, they told us, we want to see them the way they’re shown in Korea.”
And because music is auditory, not visual, it’s a medium that lends itself to addictive consumption and maniacal appreciation, but not the kinds of collaborative phenomena that are the pillars of most pop-culture activity and community — things like cosplay (dressing up as favored characters) and fan fiction (extending or re-envisioning beloved works through original fanmade stories and art).
All of these factors point to the reality that K-Pop in its current modes isn’t a very blendable medium. Its fans want to consume it in as pure and unadulterated form as possible — with incomprehensible language, odd visual idioms and untranslatable nuances entirely intact. The visual media of J-Pop have been culture-hacked and hybridized from the very beginning, often in ways that have caused hard-core fans to grit their teeth — but this flexibility has also allowed it to readily mainstream into U.S. culture, even to the point where even American-made homages (like virtually every cartoon now airing on kiddie TV) are as popular as the Japanese originals. By contrast, I don’t think it’s obvious that an American artist emulating K-Pop tropes can succeed either in the U.S. or abroad (though it’s not for want of a few earnest artists trying).

The Ainu were (pure blooded Ainu are nearly extinct) a remnant of an early Caucasoid race. Caucasoids evolved long before Mongoloids and were widespread throughout Eurasia and, it has been discovered, into the Americas. The Caucasoid form is a more generalized form than the Mongoloid. Mongoloid morphology is relatively new. It evolved in Siberia about seven thousand years ago as an adaption to Arctic cold. The epicanthic fold for example keeps the eyes warmer because of the extra layer of fat in the eyelids. The rounder head and flatter face are advantageous for avoiding the effect of frostbite.
Caucasoids are tens of thousands of years old. The Upper Cave male 101 found in China is approximately 28 thousand years old and is definitely Caucasoid. Upper Cave 101 male’s skull is a near perfect match in morphology to the Spirit Cave mummy of Nevada which is approximately 10 thousand years old These Skulls match closely to the Norse. The description of the Ainu appearing to be Norse was accurate

My theory is that there is only a limited set of human phenotypes. It is a closed set. There are only X number of phenotypes to choose from. One of those is more or less “Caucasoid.” Via the roll of the dice, some races ancient and modern ended with this particular phenotype because it was only of a few possible end-types for a human face.

Your theory on racial phenotypes is pretty much in sync with mainstream anthropology. However, some hominids such as Peking Man look completely different; yet Peking Man is a homo sapiens subspecies. I think that in order to change one feature into a completely different form; another feature must follow. For example; the jaw must fit the skull; therefore if you were to change the dimensions of the mandibles and yet maintain anatomical efficiency, you must change the form of the entire skull, like a Domino Effect. So yes, it is possible to have an entirely different phenotype than Caucasoid-Negroid-Mongoloid-Australoid, but a lot of mutations must be selected for simultaneously.
Nonsense….It must be kept in mind that the oldest morphology by far is that of the Negroid. Homo erectus had a Negroid morphology (with a smaller cranium). The Eurasian forms are much younger and have evolved out of the Australoids who left Africa 50 thousand(ish) years ago. When you look at pictures of (pure) Ainu what you see is the early Caucasoid phenotype most recently diverged from that of the Australoids who were the earliest Homo sapiens to colonize Eurasia. The ancestors of the Ainu evolved their Caucasoid form as an adaptive response to colder climate.

Human craniofacial data were used to assess the similarities and differences between recent and prehistoric Old World samples, and between these samples and a similar representation of samples from the New World. The data were analyzed by the neighbor-joining clustering procedure, assisted by bootstrapping and by canonical discriminant analysis score plots. The first entrants to the Western Hemisphere of maybe 15,000 years ago gave rise to the continuing native inhabitants south of the U.S.–Canadian border. These show no close association with any known mainland Asian population. It has to be said that the caucasoid and mongoloid split dating, and the date of the first occupation of japan aren’t too far apart. The jomon being isolated and not taking part in the developments in the rest of asia until contact with paleo-siberians and the yayoi gives the expected result doen’t it? I am not sure if the cold climate will make a sharp nose as on caucasoid and ainu themself, see the northern china, eskimo, the Mongolians, the Japanese non-Ainu, north korea people, they all have flat nose, as well as Australoid race. Something is lost in the Ainu theory derived from a mixture of Mongoloid and Australoid and I am not sure if the theory is correct,.Until now Ainu origin remains a mystery.
Intuitively we see Melanesians and Australian aborigines look similar like Negroid but to the scientific facts Melanesian have a close genetic relationship to the aboriginal Australian rather than to Negroid, although both have some phenotype similiraties to the Negroid’s phenotype as in facial characteristics and skin color. So, I ask do differences in distance and time so far that cause a distant genetic relationships between Australoid and Negroid?If this is true then a theory which says that Ainu is an ancestor of ProtoCaucasoid is true ,this theory can be explained as follow: by far away distance and time for thousand years then Ainu in the Caucasus became ProtoCaucasoid and Ainu in north eastern Asia nearest to the north pole in very cold climate evolved into Mongoloid but Ainu in subtropic climate in north eastern Asia and Japan remain in their origin. If the one race split into two groups and stay in a place away from each other then by far away distance and time for thousands of years the two groups would have different genetic but still have a very similar phenotype, that’s what happened to the Ainu in north eastern Asia in subtropicsl climate and Ainu in Caucasus as ProtoCaucasoid. How distance and time can alter the genetic relationship, such as the genetic relationship between Australoid and Negroid, Australoid’s phenotypes which has some similarities to the Negroid’s phenotypes but not for a genetic relationship?. What about the Ainu have some Australoid characteristics? was it the result of mixing characteristics Australoid genes?, If it is true then there were some Australoids in southeast Asia and the Pacific who had Ainu genetic and pass it down on Austronesian ethnic groups, primarily to the Polynesians.
