Very disturbing video. A toddler wanders in front of a van in a narrow alleyway in China. The driver apparently does not see the child and runs over it. He realizes what he did and takes off instead of sticking around. A second van then runs over the kid again. This one also figures out what he did and takes over. The frantic mother is freaking out the whole time. The child died.
There was a capitalist mercenary motive involved here. The driver wanted to make sure the kid was dead, because if it was just injured, he could be liable for up to $250,000 medical bills, but if he killed the kid, he’s only out $25,000. In that situation, the only ethical thing to do is to make sure the kid is dead, right? Sheesh.
All hail Deng Xiaoping!
Very good, Robert. You’re only 2 months behind on this one. As for the insurance part, you couldn’t be more off-base. The driver stated that if the girl lived, he’d be paying over 250,000 yuan for her treatment, and possibly paying for her treatment for the rest of her life. If the child died, he’d only have to pay about 20,000 RMB (yuan) in compensation. And where on earth do you get this “capitalist mercenary motive” crap?
Seriously Robert, this was all over Indian TV & BBC Asia 2 months ago.
We have the same ‘compensation’ problem here in Nepal.
Whenever a bus crashes (which is often off the precipitous cliffs that shoulder most main roads to Kathmandu) the bus driver & his fellow bus employees try to kill as many passengers as possible to avoid long term ‘compensation’ to the injured.
Usually a hammer or hatchet is used.
Good God!
I actually thought this was a fake video when I saw it on YouTube as there are some discrepancies with the original video noticeably the sudden movement of the body after the front of the back tire runs over the body.
Surprised it actually turned out to be real.
Chris, the connection is that capitalism teaches everyone that money is more important than people.
Corporations prove this on a daily basis.
I realize you’ll probably deny this, but you’re wasting your time if u try to persuade me of the validity of something I’ve seen all my life with my own experience and which is commonly understood.
uh, what?!?!?! Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but the story that is there today, is not the same story that was there yesterday, when I made my comments. Lindsay stated that there was something to the effect of an insurance problem of some sort (but he couldn’t be too sure). Today, he changes it to dollar amounts (which are still wrong, Lindsay). Get yer facts straight. Oh, and BTW, Lindsay, changing your article without mentioning the fact that you edited it shows exactly what kind of a “journalist” you really are.
Dano, the real crux of the story … the original story, not Lindsay’s twisted take on it … is the matter of how up to 20 people could just walk right by the body of the little girl, who was still alive, and not one person tried to help her. It has nothing to do with capitalism, or that money is more important than life. The driver HOPED the little girl would die. He didn’t know she was still underneath the wheels until he started moving away. He didn’t get out of the van. He stopped, and then started moving again. I’m not trying to defend the driver. What he did was reprehensible. Lindsay is embellishing the story, and making it out to be more than it actually is. Perhaps Robert Lindsay should consider changing his name to Stephen Glass?
Look Chinaman, if you don’t tone it down, I’m going to ban your yellow ass. Ok? You’re violating the comments rules. Go read them if you are not sure.
I heard in South China, drinking your own piss is considered healthy and people there do that.
Last time I looked at my ass, Lindsay, it was white. I was born and raised in Canada, my eyes are blue, and round, my hair is brown (with a tinge of grey), and my lineage goes all the way back to England and Norway. I’m not sure I can say the same about your racist ass!!
All right, I’m banning you Chris. That’s my way of saying Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays!
No edit feature here…so I’ll amend the last post..I meant to say that you’re wasting your time if u try to persuade me “against” something I’ve seen demonstrated all my life.
Based on the way Chinese drive around Los Angeles, I don’t think they are evil or thoughtless. They are just clueless.
Maybe they are just assholes, but the fact that many people didn’t help the girl may have this explanation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect
Basically, in an emergency situation, nobody seems to take action, they are expecting an authority or specific actions to do, i certainly think have experienced the effect in some situations.
